Many people can enjoy the benefits of private hospital cover for around the same price as they may have to pay in Government levies for not having private hospital cover.
People who earn over certain thresholds pay a penalty for not having private hospital cover. The Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) applies to singles earning over $90,000 and families with a combined income over $180,000 without private hospital cover.
The levy payable is a percentage of their taxable income – starting at 1% (or around $900 a year) increasing to as high as 1.5% for higher income earners. This is on top of the Medicare Levy most Australians already pay to help fund our health system. Taking out private hospital cover lets you avoid paying this surcharge altogether and you get the assurance of quality cover.
