What is a pre-existing condition?
What is a pre-existing condition?
A pre-existing condition is one where signs or symptoms of your ailment, illness or condition, existed any time in the six months before you started or upgraded your hospital cover. The condition may not even have been diagnosed.
Can I claim for a pre-existing condition?
Yes! Here’s when:
- New to health insurance = 12 month wait for any hospital benefits.
- Transferring or upgrading to higher hospital cover = 12 month wait for the higher hospital benefits.
- Waiting periods already served on a previous hospital cover won’t need to be served again.
Who decides if a condition is pre-existing?
We certainly aren’t medical professionals, so we enlist the help of someone who is. This independent person will decide based on information from your doctor(s), along with your associated claims history.
When in doubt
If you have less than 12 months membership on your hospital cover, make sure you contact us before you are admitted to hospital and check if the pre-existing condition waiting period applies to you.
